Private Investigator Using Drones To Catch Fraudsters
Private investigators have long had to spend hours, days or weeks on a stakeout to catch people collecting disability benefits fraudulently. Technology is changing that as video cameras are smaller than ever. Motion detection allows for cameras to automatically turn on, follow a target and even adjust the zoom without the aid of an operator. This software means that investigators no longer have to sit in front of the camera for hours either. They are small enough to be hidden virtually anywhere, in common objects found along the street, or anywhere that allows a clear look at the suspect.
A private investigator in Florida has even started using drones to observe people suspected of collecting disability benefits unlawfully. He states that Workers’ Compensation fraud costs Americans approximately $1,000 each. These statistics are typically quoted by those who contend a growing problem of fraud, although a recent Frontline PBS investigation concluded that these numbers are greatly exaggerated.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) Using Video To Catch Fraud
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is the investigative arm of Congress. They state that several agencies have already used video as a method of gathering important evidence against people who are falsely collecting disability for a work-related injury. For example, the U.S. Postal Service Inspector General acted on an anonymous tip about a postal worker collecting disability benefits for a condition that wouldn’t allow the person to work because sitting for periods of longer than 15 minutes would cause pain and swelling. Investigators followed the couple for two months, finding them participating in all sorts of activities they should not have been able to do, per their documented conditions.
Injured or Disabled Workers Need Not Worry
We want to stress that, as long as you have a legal reason to collect Workers’ Compensation or Social Security Disability benefits, you need not worry about these covert tactics. These agencies are merely mitigating losses and fraudulent behavior. If you were injured at work or on the job, you are entitled to Workers’ Compensation benefits. If your injury renders you unable to work, you are probably eligible for disability benefits, so long as your injury is considered to be disabling.
