Study Confirms Safety Concerns of Essure Sterilization Device
A recent study strengthened the complaints reported by women who chose the Essure method of permanent, non-surgical sterilization. Women chose the device for the appeal of avoiding surgery. However, the study found that women who have the Essure device were forced to undergo up to 10 times the amount of revisionary surgery as women who chose a surgical sterilization method.
FDA Investigating Essure & Findings From The Study
The FDA has received thousands of complaints from women who have the Essure device, and has stated that they are going to review the findings of the study in order to determine if further warnings are needed. Bayer, the manufacturer of the device, believes the Essure device to be safe for “most women”.
Lawmakers Urging FDA To Ban Essure
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) sent a letter to the FDA arguing that the risks involved with Essure far outweigh potential benefits. She cited numerous complaints and asked that the product be withdrawn from the market. Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA) has introduced a bill to force the FDA to ban the Essure device from the market, citing over 22,000 women on Facebook who have come forward.
