Legislators are being urged to pursue bus safety regulations after numerous deadly bus accidents over the past decade, happening as recently as this month, when 15 passengers were killed in a bus crash in New York. On Wednesday, a subcommittee was held to hear the bill, and many Transportation Department officials were asked to explain why progress has slowed concerning bus safety regulations. Some of those include placing seat belts on buses, and recorders which keep track of how long a driver has been behind the wheel. Also, stronger roofs would prevent passengers from being crushed or ejected, and enhanced windows would prevent breakage. Easier-to-open exits and windows are also on the docket of requests.
According to news reports, rollovers caused half of all bus fatalities, and 70% of the fatalities resulted from passengers being ejected from the bus. So far, the only regulation which has been put fully into effect is banning texting by drivers.
