News sources reported that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced their approval of the LINX Reflux Management System for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients with chronic symptoms. The system is designed for use in patients that have surpassed the effectiveness of maximum medical therapy in the treatment of GERD.
GERD is a disorder that causes irritation and heartburn in the esophagus due to the backflow of food and liquid. GERD patients are generally advised to adjust their diet and lifestyle to adjust for the condition. Surgical options are commonly reserved for patients that do not respond to those changes or the use of available medications, such as antacids or proton pump inhibitors.
Director of the Office of Device Evaluation in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health Christy Foreman stated, “The LINX Reflux Management System is a sterile, single-use, surgically placed device used to treat the symptoms associated with GERD. LINX offers an options to patients and their healthcare providers and is an alternative to current surgical procedures.” The LINX systems consists of a series of titanium beads with magnetic cores that are connected by independent titanium wires in the form of a ring. The ring is implanted into the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to prevent backflow from the stomach. The magnetic beads provide additional strength to a weakened LES. The magnetic beads are forced apart upon swallowing by the greater force exerted by the esophageal muscles, then returns to a resting state upon completion of swallowing.
As a Harrisburg personal injury attorney, I’m glad that research has continued to make strides in the safer, more efficient treatment of patients with chronic disorders. Manufacturers have many safety measures in place to ensure the quality and safety of their products prior to sending them to the market, however, even under the most meticulous eye, mistakes can be made. If you’ve suffered adverse health effects through the use of a defective medical device, it could be in your interests to contact a York personal injury attorney to learn more about your legal rights as a consumer and the options that could possibly be available to you.Tweet
