What is Avandia?
Avandia (Rosiglitazone) is a drug that was approved and widely used to help treat patients with type 2 diabetes. It helps improve the control of blood sugar by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin, but some side effects may cause patients risk of heart failure and/or other heart realted problems.
60,000 - 100,000 heart attacks might be linked to Avandia since it came out eight years ago.
According to an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine, "Rosiglitazone was associated with a significant increase in the risk of myocardial infarction and with an increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular causes that had borderline significance".
If you or someone you love has or is taking Avanadia medication and is either experiencing unusual side effects or would like more information on your legal rights and options, please contact the Law Offices of Handler, Henning & Rosenberg at 1-800-422-2224.
Increased Risk of Heart Attack
Ever since Avandia was approved in 1999, the FDA has been running controlled clinical tests in order to determine other potential heart-related risks with Avandia. Some recent data is showing that patients using Avandia to help treat type 2 diabetes have a 30-40 percent increased risk of heart attack and other heart-related problems than patients who treat their diabetes with placebo or other anti-diabetic therapy.
More than 6 million people have been treating their type 2 diabetes with Avandia or Avandamet (related drug) since it came on the market in 1999.
