Complete Moisture Plus™ Contact Lens Solution Attorneys
Complete Moisture Plus contact lens solution was recalled after it was linked to an outbreak of a painful and potentially blinding eye infection. For a time, this product was one of the best-selling contact lens solution products on the market. It was new as it was an "all-in-one" product that allowed contact lens users to only purchase one product to serve as both a lens cleaner and lens storage fluid.
On May 29, 2007, government officials warned users of the cleaning and storage solution made by Advanced Medical Optics to discard the solution while it investigated 138 confirmed cases of acanthamoeba keratitis, a parasite-caused infection that is difficult to detect and treat. Advanced Medical Optics had recalled 2.9 million bottles of the same contact lens solution last November after they were found to contain a bacterial contamination, though most of that solution had been sold in Asia.
Following this, AMO, Inc. decided to initiate a voluntary recall of its product, and this recall was done with the help of the FDA.
Acanthamoeba Keratitis
The word “acanthamoeba” is the name of a parasite that exists in nature, and its existence is limited to water. If this organism gets on he cornea of your eye (the clear area in the middle of your eye), it can cause a serious infection known as acanthamoeba keratitis. While this condition can be contracted in several ways, it is almost always exclusive to those who wear contact lenses. This condition is a very rare condition, and typical prevalence is that this condition occurs in only two people out of every one million.Recent studies showed that those who used Complete Moisture PLUS were almost seven times more likely to develop this condition than those who did not. The problem was traced to a parasite that was present in AMO's plant in China, and the company decided then to pull the product off the shelves.
Early symptoms include pain in one or both eyes, redness, blurry vision and sensitivity to light.
