Byetta is not currently being recalled. However, Byetta has been associated with pancreatitis and pancreatitis-related deaths. Pancreatitis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is vitally important to digestion, as it provides a normal person with insulin to process sugars.

The FDA has recently stated that “cases of acute pancreatitis have been reported in patients treated with Byetta”. The FDA further stated in August 2008 there were 6 reported cases of severe pancreatitis, and two of those cases resulted in death. Byetta makers followed this report later that week by stating that four more people have died of pancreatitis-related health problems. Diabetics naturally have an increased risk of pancreatitis, as their pancreas is already compromised due to their diabetes, therefore, Byetta may not be exclusively to blame

Symptoms of Pancreatitis

The trademark symptom of pancreatitis is ongoing severe abdominal pain, sometimes accompanied by vomiting. If you are currently taking Byetta and experiencing either of these symptoms, and suspect that you may have pancreatitis please call your doctor immediately. Pancreatitis can be fatal. The FDA advises you not to continue using Byetta if you have contracted pancreatitis.

As we stated, there is no current Byetta recall. However, if there is an increase in the number of confirmed cases of pancreatitis while taking Byetta, it is likely that Byetta may ultimately be recalled. In the meantime, the FDA is advising physicians and other healthcare professionals to advise patients who experience pancreatitis-related symptoms to contact emergency medical services.

If you believe you are suffering from the side effects of Byetta, contact your doctor or visit your local Emergency Room. If you have a loved one who has died from acute pancreatitis or if have been hospitalized while taking Byetta, please contact us for a free case evaluation.

About Byetta – Linked to Pancreatitis and Deaths

Originally released in 2005, Byetta’s primary function is to help diabetics manage their blood glucose (sugar) levels in a normal, healthy range. Like insulin, it is administered by injection and has been distributed to an estimated 700,000 type 2 diabetics. No serious problems were reported until October of 2007.

Problems with Byetta

In October of 2007, the FDA issued a report stating that 30 patients had reported serious pancreatic problems. They had developed pancreatitis and many of the cases were acute, meaning the people affected were in serious immediate danger.

The FDA released another report a few days later ordering drug companies to provide a more direct, stricter label warning users of pancreas-related side effects. This report was in response to 6 more patients contracting pancreatitis, 2 of which died as a result of acute pancreatitis.

Pancreatitis Symptoms Reviewed

As mentioned earlier, symptoms of pancreatitis include nausea, abdominal pain (often times severe pain), and vomiting. All of these symptoms are due to the swelling of the pancreas, and if not treated, this condition can be fatal.

Pancreatic Function and Diabetes

When functioning properly, the pancreas produces insulin (along with other enzymes) to process the intake of glucose (sugars) found in the foods we eat. In diabetics, the pancreas does not function properly, thus the need for insulin injections.
