Based on data from a large clinical trial, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is informing the public about an increased risk of muscle injury in patients taking the maximum approved dosage of Zocor (simvastatin 80mg). The data under review by the FDA is from the Study of the Effectiveness of Additional Reductions in Cholesterol and Homocysteine (SEARCH).
Myopathy, a muscle injury, is a known side effect with all statin medications. Myopathy symptoms include:
The higher the dose of statin, the greater the risk of developing myopathy. The most severe form of myopathy is called rhabdomyolysis, which occurs when a protein (myoglobin) is released. Myoglobin is released as muscle fibers break down and it can cause kidney damage. In fact, rhabdomyolysis can cause such serious kidney damage that patients may develop kidney failure, which can be fatal.
