In a press statement, Caterpillar Inc, in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), announced they are recalling their Caterpillar commercial trucks because of the unexpected continuous brake application resulting from an internal leakage of the Bendix relay valves. This leakage may lead to the brakes overheating and result in a vehicle fire. This leakage of valves can also cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash. Caterpillar announced that the owners and dealers can receive a repair of their vehicles free of charge by contacting the company and scheduling an appointment with one of their technicians. However, this will only be a temporary repair until Bendix can develop a permanent replacement part that addresses the problem.
As a Lancaster car accident lawyer, I’ve seen the results of motorists using defective auto products many times over the course of my career and I understand the kinds of tragic injuries they can suffer as a result. Vehicle manufacturers take great care to ensure that quality products reach their customers, however, through the development of these parts, mistakes can be made. If you’ve suffered an injury in a crash that you think can be attributed to the installation of a defective auto product, contact a car accident lawyer in your city to discuss the legal options that may be available to you.
