FDA Warns Ebola Drug Companies

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent warning letters to several companies that are selling products online advertised to prevent, treat, or even cure the deadly disease brought on by the Ebola virus. The FDA was alerted to the issue by consumer complaints.

Drug Claims Unfounded, Misleading

One company who specializes in essential oils claims that their oils are highly anti-viral and that they ‘could help prevent your contracting the Ebola virus.’ The company’s website also claims “Viruses (including Ebola) are no match…” and that “Ebola virus cannot live in the presence of cinnamon bark or organo” which are ingredients in one of their featured essential oil blends.

As of this writing, the essential oil product mentioned has been removed from the company’s website. There is a disclaimer at the top of their website stating “These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.”

Another company sells a product called Nano Silver, stating that, at 10 ppm, it kills every pathogen it has been tested with. They claim the product has been advocating it’s health benefits long before the Ebola outbreak. One of their trustees is a retired attorney who states that the company used the word ‘cure’ as it is commonly used, to help a person get over the disease, rather than the equivalent of an FDA approved treatment.

FDA Has a Clear Message

According to the FDA’s Assistant Commissioner for Counterterrorism Policy and Acting Deputy Chief Scientist, “At this point there are no drugs or vaccines that have been shown to be safe and effective to treat or prevent Ebola disease.” She also states that the FDA is expediting programs to develop better alternatives.

There are currently two vaccines being developed, one of which is in Phase One of clinical trials and another that is expected to begin very soon. The FDA holds that ‘internet cures’ are not the preferred method of treatment. They are continuing to monitor the internet and how these companies respond to their warning letters moving forward.
