Widening PA Turnpike to Slow Traffic Starting Today

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is continuing it’s efforts to completely rebuild the PA Turnpike starting today in York County. The PTC will begin widening the Turnpike to six lanes, from the existing four, and will ad a 26 foot area in the center median. There will be two lanes open at all times during the construction, which is expected to last until 2018.

West Shore Interchange in Harrisburg

Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76) junction with Interstate 83 located just south of New Cumberland in Fairview Township, York County is named the Harrisburg West Shore Interchange.

The section being widened spans from milepost 242, just East of the Harrisburg interchange, to Exit 247, near the Harrisburg East interchange, according to the PA Turnpike website. Included in this upgrade, is the new Susquehanna Bridge Project at milepost 245.4. Once complete, there will be six lanes of Turnpike between the Harrisburg East and Harrisburg West interchanges.

From PA Turnpike website: This multi-stage project includes the widening of the mainline Pennsylvania Turnpike to 3 lanes in each direction, replacement of the bridge over Lewisberry Rd. (SR 0114), construction of retaining and sound walls, the reconstruction of Lewisberry Rd, realignment of Evergreen Rd. and miscellaneous roadway construction. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on the Turnpike at most times during construction.
