Miralax / Polyethylene Glycol 3350
Attorneys Fighting on Behalf of Affected Patients in Pennsylvania
MiraLAX is the brand name of the drug polyethylene glycol 3350, commonly abbreviated as PEG 3350. It’s approved for short-term use in adult patients with constipation or irregular bowel movements. It is not recommended for use by patients 17-years-old or younger. However, for years doctors have been prescribing MiraLAX to children for extended periods of time. In some cases, doctors prescribed MiraLAX to young children for up to two years. Thousands of parents have noticed that their children exhibited extreme psychiatric side effects after taking MiraLAX—and the FDA has noticed too. Experts have noted that PEG 3350 can degrade into ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol—two toxic chemicals found in antifreeze. After thousands of parents reported adverse side effects, the FDA funded a study on the effects of PEG 3350 on children. The study began in 2014 and is not yet completed.
Children who have taken MiraLAX have exhibited harmful psychiatric or neurological symptoms:
- Manic behavior
- Mood swings
- Overall anxiety
- Nervous tics
- Obsessive habits
- Aggressive behavior
For many parents, their children never fully recovered from their conditions. These effects can completely derail a young person’s life and require years of supplemental support to reverse, if it's even possible.
