Uloric Lawsuit Attorneys
Helping Patients File Harmful Drug Claims in Pennsylvania & Nationwide Since 1922
Uloric is a drug made by Takeda Pharmaceuticals prescribed to treat symptoms of gout. The drug received approval from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009. Takeda produced Uloric as an alternative to allopurinol, a drug approved since 1966. Now, several Uloric users and a former Takeda consultant have come forward with concerns that the drug has significant negative side effects. Alarmingly, the former consultant is accusing the company of suppressing information to conceal the dangerous side effects of Uloric.

What Does Uloric Do?
Uloric, also known as febuxostat, treats gout in adults. Gout is a form of arthritis caused when uric acid builds up in the body. An elevated amount of uric acid causes swelling, redness, and joint pain. Uloric treats gout by lowing the amount of uric acid in the blood. Because treatment options for gout is limited, the FDA considers the need for its treatment as unmet.
A Whistleblower Lawsuit Against Takeda: Years of Research Suppression
Recently, a former safety consultant to Takeda named Dr. Helen Ge filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the pharmaceutical giant. She claims the company suppressed information that would have alerted patients and doctors about risks associated with Uloric. Takeda hired Dr. Ge in 2008 as a contract physician to perform medical reviews of adverse events involving Takeda-produced drugs.
In 2010, Dr. Ge filed a complaint regarding four Takeda drugs that included Uloric, accusing the company of pressuring her to falsify her findings and diminish their significance. Shockingly, Dr. Ge alleges that Takeda officials altered her medical assessments before submitting them to the FDA. Dr. Ge also claims that Takeda suppressed Uloric’s potentially dangerous interactions with other drugs.
Risks Associated with Uloric
During the last two years, the FDA has produced numerous drug safety communications concerning Uloric.
In 2017, an FDA report revealed that a safety trial found Uloric to be the cause of heart-related death, non-deadly heart attack, non-deadly stroke, and a loss of adequate blood supply to the heart which requires emergency surgery. Additionally, after numerous patients came forward with reports of kidney failure, Uloric’s label began recommending a limited dose to patients with renal conditions. This warning came in September of 2017, seven years after the drug went on the market. The FDA updated their report in February of 2019. The update supported the original report and added warnings for patients.
The warning tells patients taking Uloric to seek immediate medical attention if the following occurs:
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Numbness or weakness on one side of your body
- Trouble talking
- Sudden severe headache
Additionally, the FDA warned that healthcare professionals should only prescribe Uloric if a patient is unable to take allopurinol. So, after concerns from a physician that researched the drug, reports of side effects from patients, and warnings from the FDA, there is finally an official governmental warning about Uloric’s dangers.
