Many people have been injured, or even killed, as a result of a rollover accident in a Yamaha Rhino ATV. These vehicles are inherently prone to rolling due to their design defects, including a high center of gravity and small narrow wheels. Making a sudden turn on a flat surface can result in a rollover accident even at moderate speeds.

Originally introduced in 2003, Yamaha offered to modify the defective design of the Rhino in an effort to make the vehicle safer, and even applied a warning sticker. While these efforts are a step in the right direction, they fall short of completely addressing the design flaws of the vehicle. The sides of the vehicle are left open so that the driver and passenger’s legs or arms can easily protrude during a rollover.

Serious Injuries Have Been Sustained in a Yamaha Rhino ATV Rollover Accident

Victims of Yamaha Rhino rollover accidents typically suffer serious injuries such as broken or crushed legs, ankles, feet, or hands. Some Yamaha Rhino rollover accidents have resulted in debilitating handicaps or even death. Children are often the innocent casualties of such accidents.

In 2006, Yamaha sent a letter to owners of the Rhino ATVs with a warning of the possibility of a rollover in a sharp turn. The wording of the letter suggested the victims of the Rhino rollover accidents were to blame for their injuries. We believe the inherent design flaws are to blame and that Yamaha Motor Corp. should be held responsible. Yamaha warned passengers to use seatbelts, wear motorcycle helmets, and keep all parts of their bodies inside the vehicle at all times. Since that letter it became increasingly obvious that these suggestions were doing little to protect victims of Rhino rollover accidents.

    Modifications Finally Offered

Finally, in 2007, Yamaha offered to modify all Rhino ATVs free of charge by adding small doors and handholds. Anyone was allowed to have their Rhino modified, whether they purchased the vehicle new or used. Yamaha also included a warning sticker and updated the owners manual to include the information about the risk of a Rhino rollover. While these actions were commendable, they did nothing for those already seriously injured or killed in a Rhino rollover accident.
