Earlier this month, Pennsylvania State Police released information about DUI arrests over the New Year’s holiday weekend. Authorities accomplished a four-day enforcement period from December 29, 2018, until January 1, 2019. This most recent effort to stop drunk drivers from injuring others resulted in more arrests than the previous year. Notably, the enforcement lasted one day longer than the last year.
Results of the Enforcement
During the enforcement period, troopers investigated 642 crashes. This is a significant drop from the previous year which saw 1,169 accidents. Troopers reported that 64 of this year’s crashes involved alcohol and 155 people were injured.
Sadly, four people lost their lives over the weekend, with one of the fatalities caused by someone under the influence of alcohol. Though 2019’s enforcement period was only one day longer, DUI arrest nearly doubled. State troopers arrested 406 people this year. In 2018, police arrested 284 people for DUI offenses.
DUI Accidents in Pennsylvania
Enforcement periods such as the one accomplished this year are critical for the protection of the public on Pennsylvania roads. Driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol continues to be one of the most serious threats to drivers each day throughout the state. The problem is getting worse. In 2017, the amount of alcohol-related crashes increased to 10,346 from 10,256 during the previous year.
Frustratingly, 26 percent of all traffic deaths in 2017 were caused by drivers who were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This statistic proves that enforcement such as the one seen over the holidays is needed to save lives and prevent even more people from being injured by a car accident.
