Tens of Millions Won for the Victims of Negligence
For decades, patients who needed an MRI were given gadolinium-based contrast agents, or GBCAs, to provide a clear picture of the brain and other organs. Patients were assured that GBCAs were harmless; however, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently determined that gadolinium can collect in the body's organs, including in the kidney and brain. The FDA has updated its warning label requirements accordingly. That means any patient who has required multiple MRIs over the course of their life in the last 30 years may be at risk for gadolinium toxicity. Gadolinium toxicity lawsuits have been filed against pharmaceutical manufacturers such as Omniscan, Optimark, Eovist, and others. These companies produce the GBCAs with the highest levels of retention.
Ask your doctor about who supplied your MRI contrast agent. Even if it wasn't any of the companies we mentioned, you may still be at risk—call Handler, Henning & Rosenberg LLC as soon as possible to discuss your options.
The Potentially Fatal Complications of Gadolinium Retention
Gadolinium is used on patients who are undergoing an MRI to enhance the image created by the MRI. There is evidence that demonstrates gadolinium does not leave the body as quickly as the drug manufacturers promise. Gadolinium retention essentially means the chemical can build up within your body, rather than breaking down (like most contrast agents are designed to do). For patients who suffer from kidney problems, the complications presented by gadolinium toxicity are especially dangerous.
The three conditions most associated with gadolinium retention are:
- Gadolinium storage condition
- Gadolinium deposition disease
- Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis
Gadolinium deposition disease can occur to anyone, including patients with perfectly healthy kidneys. It presents with persistent and painful symptoms that can appear anywhere from a few hours after receiving the GBCA to several weeks later. Symptoms include bone pain, arm and leg pain, a burning sensation, and brain fog. Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is even more severe. NSF chiefly appears when people have compromised kidney function due to gadolinium build-up—patients then experience thickened, darkened skin, painful muscle and tendon shortening, and potentially fatal symptoms connected to gadolinium poisoning.
Research shows that Gadolinium stays in the bodies of certain patients for many years after an MRI. The most common method to test for the presence of retained gadolinium is through a 24-hour urine test designed by Mayo Clinic.
Gadolinium Side Effects
In 2017, the Medical Imaging Drugs Advisory Committee (MIDAC) of the FDA voted to add more warnings to gadolinium-based contrast agents. Several clients attended the MIDAC meeting and shared their experience with the FDA, as noted in Chuck Norris' WND article on the hearing. Patients with the highest risk of gadolinium retention include those taking multiple lifetime doses, pregnant patients, children, and patients with inflammatory conditions. Gadolinium side effects include:
- Body pain
- Brain fog
- Burning sensations inside the body
- Cognitive problems
- Facial swelling
- Shortness of breath
- Speech difficulty
- Thickening or hardening skin
- Tightness in joints
Long-Term Gadolinium Retention Warnings
In 2017, the FDA released a new warning stating that long-term gadolinium retention highlighted problems for those with kidney failure. They also discovered that gadolinium in the agents lingers longer in the body of patients. Gadolinium is retained for months or even years in several organs—the highest concentration has been found in the bones along with other organs (brain, skin, kidney, liver, and spleen). It is vital for patients to receive the latest Medication Guide for Gadolinium before receiving GBCA treatments.
Gadolinium Mass Tort Lawsuit
If you or a loved one have been affected by gadolinium retention, you have the right to seek compensation. Our firm is currently investigating cases for a Mass Tort lawsuit. A Mass Tort lawsuit involves hundreds or thousands of plaintiffs. Unlike a Class Action, a Mass Tort allows plaintiffs’ cases to be handled and resolved on their individual merits, and successful plaintiffs are awarded compensation according to the severity of their injuries.

Our gadolinium lawyers are investigating gadolinium manufacturers for negligence and lack of care when designing these products. For now, researchers are furiously trying to determine what the long-term effects of gadolinium retention are. Our part is to help suffering patients hold the makers of the gadolinium-based contrast agents accountable for their role in each patient's suffering.
