Impact of Ozempic-Related Gastrointestinal Issues

GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound all contain an active ingredient that slows digestion, allowing patients to feel fuller for longer periods. The drug was developed to help diabetes patients manage their blood sugar. However, the very thing that makes GLP-1 drugs helpful has adverse effects on a small but significant group of diabetics.

In October 2023, NBC News reported on the first study linking use of GLP-1 to a higher risk of severe gastrointestinal problems. “Although rare, the incidence of these adverse events can happen. I’ve seen it happen,” said Mohit Sodhi, the study’s lead author and medical student at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine in Vancouver. “People should know what they’re getting into.”

It should be noted that the ‘rarity’ of these effects are relative. The study found that 5–8 people per 1,000 users suffered pancreatitis, 7–10 per 1,000 users suffered gastroparesis, and 8 per 1,000 users suffered bowel obstruction. However, that rate is potentially hundreds of users per 1 million prescriptions. Since Ozempic alone was prescribed 20 million times in 2023, potentially thousands of people could end up suffering these side effects.

Some of these effects, like bowel obstructions or gastroparesis, can require surgical treatment. Bowel obstructions that go untreated can lead to life-threatening conditions like tissue death. In either case, severe conditions can ruin any person’s quality of life.
