The Best Lawyers Methodology & Tiered System
Every year, Best Lawyers endeavors to gather a list of the highest-performing, most trusted attorneys in every practice area and region in the United States. They employ a multi-phase process that collates data from thousands of lawyers across hundreds of cities and dozens of legal areas of expertise: a nomination phase, followed by peer evaluations, and concluded with an independent research and tiering phase.
To begin, lawyers are asked to nominate the leading local authorities in their practice area. The central question is “who would you entrust a case to?” The nominees who receive the most votes then receive confidential peer evaluations to ensure that only the most reputable and highly respected practitioners are included. Then, the peer evaluations are vetted via independent research to evaluate a potential honoree’s legal contributions and accomplishments. Each of these areas is granted a point value.
Once the point totals are tabulated, the resulting pool of nominees are divided into geographic region, practice area, and tiers—then released to the public as the latest edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Any name on the list belongs to a highly accomplished and well-respected attorney, and we’re proud to be included in it.
