About the Best Lawyers® “Best Law Firms” List
The “Best Law Firms” list comprises law firms that have met rigorous peer evaluation and professional standards. To be eligible, a law firm must have at least one attorney included in the most recent edition of The Best Lawyers in America®.
The list ranks law firms in three tiers, both nationally and across 188 different metropolitan areas. The national rankings cover 75 practice areas, while metro area rankings can include up to 127 practice areas.
In order to gather information and make an evaluation, Best Lawyers commissions a Law Firm Leaders survey. The survey-takers are asked to provide information about the most nationally preeminent firms in a practice area they know well. As a result, the list is based on data from over 10 million evaluations of leading attorneys at over 20,000 firms nationwide.
The Rigorous Best Lawyers® Methodology
The methodology for ranking the law firms includes several stages:
- Initially, eligible law firms are tallied according to that year’s Best Lawyers® honorees.
- Next, the eligible law firms receive submission packets to distribute among their former clients. These clients are asked to provide feedback on the firm’s practices, responsiveness, expertise, cost-effectiveness, and other areas of professional excellence.
- Data for “Best Law Firms” also includes answers from the same year’s Best Lawyers ballots. The ballots filled out during the Best Lawyers nomination process include questions about whether a firm is a worthy competitor, if the respondent would refer a client, and their level of expertise.
- The collected quantitative and qualitative data are combined into an overall point total.
- The scores are compared to other firms in the same practice and metropolitan areas.
- Firms are classified into tiers: Tier 1 firms scored within a certain percentage of the highest-scoring firms, Tier 2 scored within a broader percentage of the highest-scoring firms, and so on.
Being recognized in the “Best Law Firms” list is a significant accomplishment. It signifies that our firm not only stands out among the thousands of participating law firms but also that we have earned the respect of our peers and the trust of our clients.
