Why Were Allergan Textured Breast Implants Recalled?
As their name implies, textured breast implants have a rough surface which enables them to interact with the tissue of the body and stay in place. Allergan textured breast implants garnered attention in 2017 after initial reports revealed that over 300 women with them developed BIA-ALCL. After this report, 38 countries recalled Allergan textured breast implants. The FDA did not join in removing Allergan implants from the American market, citing a need for further research.
Then, in July of 2019, the FDA released an alarming report. The administration revealed that it found 573 global cases of BIA-ALCL in the world. Of these cases, 481 of them were individuals with Allergan textured breast implants. In other words, 84 percent of the world’s known cases of BIA-ALCL are linked to Allergan textured breast implants. So far, investigators have identified 13 individuals who have died from BIA-ALCL. Of these individuals, investigators have confirmed that 12 had Allergan textured breast implants.
BIA-ALCL: Details & Symptoms
BIA-ALCL typically manifest in the scar tissues and fluids around a breast implant. The cancer can spread to other parts of the body in some cases, but typically remains concentrated around implants. Symptoms of BIA-ALCL can take up to ten years to appear.
BIA-ALCL symptoms include the following:
- Swelling
- Pain near the implants
- Skin irritation
Upon diagnosis of BIA-ALCL, the FDA suggests that patients undergo implant removal. Additionally, those with BIA-ALCL will need to have the scar tissue around their implant removed. Implant removal can be an extensive operation, so the FDA does not recommend that people not showing symptoms of BIA-ALCL have their Allergan textured breast implants removed. Instead, they recommend that they get frequent screenings for cancer and keep a close eye on any new symptoms.
